Due to the sudden rise of short videos in the form of YouTube shorts or Instagram reels, our attention spans have been significantly ‘shortened. Social media has left us begging for dopamine the moment we keep our phones down.
Due to this, we tend to overlook actual pieces of information presented to us for the sake of instant gratification and keeping up with important current affairs tends to become difficult. This is why Dhruv Rathee delivers his content in the most engaging way possible, making sure that people’s attention spans don’t get the best of them.
YouTube Journey
Born in 1994 to a humble middle-class family in Rohtak, Haryana, Dhruv always had a knack for creating videos. Fast forward to when he was 9 years old; the year was 2003, it all started with a newly bought digital camera with which he recorded his first-ever video.
It was when he was 14 years old that he got into reading and mechanical robots. There was a time when he was completely and utterly obsessed with building robots using Lego blocks and couldn’t go a day without it. Clubbing his two passions together, he created a fully functional robot programmed with a touch sensor to carry his digital camera around.
Fast forward to 2011, he got interested in all things politics and his political views were so powerful that he started creating videos addressing them. It was only in 2014 that he uploaded his first video and in 2017, he already had 50,000 subscribers. This was when he started taking his YouTube career seriously.
He says, “When you’re truly passionate about something, becoming consistent and disciplined becomes comparatively easier. Throughout my entire YouTube career, I’ve only focused on how I can improve myself.”
Educational Background
For someone who was always interested in diversifying his interests, Dhruv has an impressive educational background. After securing an 85% in his 12th boards, he took the IIT and JEE entrance exams but failed to get into his desired college.
Right after, he also gave himself a chance to get into the army and took the NDA exam. After not passing the second round, his parents encouraged him to get into a foreign university.
This was when he applied to multiple universities and got into Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, where he completed his Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering. Why mechanical engineering you ask? “If you don’t know what to do, choose engineering, and then decide” were the exact words revolving around everyone’s head at the time in India.
He later went on to do his Master’s in Renewable Energy Engineering from the same university. Later, purely to quench his curiosity and be a better YouTuber, he obtained another bachelor’s degree in Economics and Business Management. Interestingly, he also met the love of his life in Germany on a tram on his way to work and now they’re happily married.
