OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Fired from Board of Directors

ChatGPT-maker OpenAI has fired its CEO Sam Altman departing him from the board of directors amid a lack of confidence in his ability to lead the mission of the company to ensure artificial general intelligence benefits all humanity.

In a statement, OpenAI said, “Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities.

Sam Altman co-founded OpenAI in 2015 along with entrepreneurs Greg Brockman and Elon Musk becoming its CEO in 2020 after leaving Y Combinator as a partner. In 2022, he became the face of the popular generative AI app ChatGPT which made headlines for its unprecedented capabilities to generate human-like text on any given topic.

With OpenAI transitioning its leadership, Altman is now departing the company along with Greg Brockman stepping down as the chairman of the board of the company. Mira Murati, the company’s chief technology officer (CTO) has been appointed as interim CEO until they find a permanent successor.

Commenting on this development, Sam Altman tweeted, “I loved my time at OpenAI. It was transformative for me personally, and hopefully the world a little bit. Most of all, I loved working with such talented people. Will have more to say about what’s next later.

Greg Brockman also tweeted about this shocking news saying, “Sam and I are shocked and saddened by what the board did today. Let us first say thank you to all the incredible people who we have worked with at OpenAI, our customers, our investors, and all of those who have been reaching out. We too are still trying to figure out exactly what happened.

Sam Altman has been a very respected tech entrepreneur when it comes to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and people from around the world have appreciated his efforts towards building ChatGPT. Now, there is a whole discussion on the Internet around what happened and people are showing a lot of support for him.
